The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has taken action against Woolworths for alleged engaging in misleading and deceptive conduct on several of its environmentally-friendly ‘W Select Eco’ products.

The competition regulator alleges that, between November 2014 and November 2017, Woolworths labelled a range of disposable bowls ‘biodegradable and compostable’ but made no effort to verify the claims of the products.

In a statement, the regulator indicated they will be looking for ‘pecuniary penalties, injunctions, declarations, publication orders and costs’.

“The ACCC also alleges that Woolworths made these claims in circumstances where it was aware there was confusion among consumers and businesses about the meaning of biodegradable and compostable.”

According to ACCC Commissioner, Sarah Court, “One of the suppliers of the W Select Eco line also had significant qualifications on its website about the biodegradability and compostability of its products.”
