Interview

Tell me little about Women & Leadership New Zealand. How did it come about?

Women & Leadership New Zealand (WLNZ) and our partner organisation, Women & Leadership Australia (WLA), has been developing female leaders and supporting the increased presence of women in business and community leadership roles for almost 15 years. Its premise is based on a simple truth: that women represent an enormously under-utilised resource; thus, WLNZ and WLA believe that supporting a greater percentage of women to step up into leadership positions enables tremendous cultural and economic benefits.

I know you have the 2018 New Zealand Women’s Leadership Symposium. Any clues as to the themes that will addressed at this event?
The principal themes to be tackled at this year’s event include:
  • Resilience within the workplace
  • Enabling women to lead
  • The power of networking
  • Being bold, being brave, being new
  • Leading through change
  • Getting comfortable with the uncomfortable.

Tell me a little about this fee-support opportunity and how it came about.
The fee-support opportunity enables women to participate in a range of leadership development programs. The courses are fully accredited, part-time, and commence in June and July of this year. The funding is provided via two main sources: firstly, a number of philanthropic organisations provide funding on an ad hoc basis; however, the majority is derived from our partner organisation, the Australian School of Applied Management (ASAM). ASAM provides in-house training to a wide range of blue-chip companies across Australia, and we divert a portion of the revenue generated from these programs to WLA and WLNZ scholarship initiatives, such as this one.

Other than this opportunity, are there many funding opportunities offered by women in professional services?
There are a few. For example, the New Zealand Federation of Women’s Institutes, New Horizons for Women Trust and the New Zealand Federation of Graduate Women all offer various scholarships. Most of these do have some restrictions on who is able to apply for the funding, but the WLNZ scholarships are for any woman who works in any professional service (including law, finance, accounting, IT, telecoms, etc.) and has at least a small amount of management experience.

What do you hope women will gain from this great funding opportunity?
Women are able to apply for the opportunity to gain skills and confidence through a purpose-designed development program for women from a wide-range of backgrounds and industries. The programs provide participants with an incredibly powerful experience that results in practical outcomes and supportive networks. The funding is occasionally available once every year or so.
